Bạch Mạ Temple: Where Time Whispers in the Old Quarter
As the last days of March cast a gentle light upon moss‑covered rooftops, Bạch Mạ Temple – a National Special Relic and one of the sacred Four Guardian Temples of ancient Thăng Long – awakens in the vibrant colors of its 2026 traditional festival.

A Legacy of the Four Guardians
Bạch Mạ Temple does not clamor for attention. Instead, its beauty lies in the quiet sophistication of traditional architecture. Here, the deity Long Đỗ—guardian of the eastern quarter of the ancient capital—is venerated. As an integral part of the Four Guardian Temples (alongside Voi Phục, Kim Liên, and Quán Thánh), the site is not merely a place of worship but a living embodiment of Thăng Long’s cultural depth.
This year’s festival is organized with due solemnity, yet it carries the poetic soul of traditions preserved through generations. In the sacred courtyard, visitors and locals alike will witness ancient rites performed with meticulous care—from the opening drum ceremony and recitation of celebratory orations to the solemn rituals of the Nam Quan—each gesture bridging the present with the past.

MARCH 30–31 · FESTIVAL PROGRAMCEREMONY & PERFORMANCE
A March of Quiet Reverie
The first day (March 30) begins early with important ceremonies. As incense smoke drifts through the antique wooden pillars, a scene of timeless spirituality unfolds—reminiscent of a bygone era yet intimately connected to the pulse of the city. In the afternoon and evening, the temple grounds come alive with melodies from traditional art performances—a heartfelt offering to those who journey to reconnect with their roots.
The second day (March 31) offers a more meditative experience. The morning’s ceremony of Nữ Quan (female dignitaries) presenting incense reflects a graceful aspect of local belief. A final round of traditional music follows before the festival draws to a close with the thanksgiving ritual—a gesture of gratitude to heaven, earth, and ancestors.
