of spiritual presence

At the northwestern edge of the Old Quarter, the city opens. West Lake — Hồ Tây — is Hanoi’s largest body of water, a 17‑kilometer shore of quiet elegance. Here, ancient pagodas rise from the water’s edge, lotus ponds bloom in the summer, and the city’s pace slows to the rhythm of the lake. For centuries, this has been the retreat of emperors and poets, the site of the oldest Buddhist temple in Hanoi, and the home of a thriving café culture that has made the lake a gathering place for generations.

“Trấn Quốc Pagoda rises from a tiny peninsula — the oldest Buddhist temple in Hanoi, its red tower mirrored in the lake for 1,500 years.”

The Lake of Legends · Hồ Tây

West Lake is steeped in legend. One story tells of a dragon whose daughter fell in love with a prince; her tears formed the lake after they were separated. Another tells of a pair of celestial maidens who descended to bathe, leaving behind the lotus flowers that bloom in the lake’s waters. Historically, the lake has been a site of royal retreat since the Lý dynasty (11th century), when emperors built palaces on its shores.

Trấn Quốc Pagoda · The Oldest Temple in Hanoi

On a small peninsula in the western shore stands Trấn Quốc Pagoda, founded in the 6th century. Its centerpiece is a 15‑meter tall six‑tiered stupa. Inside, you’ll find ancient Buddha statues and a bodhi tree grown from a cutting of the original tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.

Thanh Niên Road · A Causeway of Beauty

Running along the eastern shore, Thanh Niên Road (Youth Road) separates West Lake from Trúc Bạch Lake. Lined with flame trees and frangipani, it becomes a promenade for couples and joggers at sunset.

“Sunset on West Lake — the golden hour when Tran Quoc Pagoda’s reflection stretches across calm water. A private boat tour with champagne reveals Hanoi’s most romantic skyline.”

The Lotus Season · Hoa Sen

From June to August, West Lake’s lotus ponds burst into bloom. The lotus — Vietnam’s national flower — symbolizes purity. Along the western shore, vendors sell fresh lotus flowers, seeds, and lotus tea.

Café Culture · The Lake’s Social Heart

West Lake is ringed with floating cafes built on stilts over the water. Quán Bộ Đội (Military Café) is a local institution. Lakeside Café offers panoramic views of Trấn Quốc Pagoda.

Phủ Tây Hồ · The Temple of the Princess

On the eastern shore, Phủ Tây Hồ is dedicated to Liễu Hạnh, one of the “Four Immortals” of Vietnamese folk religion. It’s a place of pilgrimage for women seeking blessings for romance and fertility.
