The legend begins in the 15th century: Emperor Lê Lợi was given a magical sword, Thuận Thiên (Heaven’s Will), by a divine turtle. With it, he expelled Ming invaders. Years later, while boating on the lake, a giant golden turtle surfaced, reclaimed the sword, and disappeared into the depths. The emperor renamed the lake Hoàn Kiếm — the Lake of the Returned Sword. Today, the legend is commemorated at Ngọc Sơn Temple and in the preserved body of a giant soft‑shell turtle, a sacred relic of Vietnamese identity.
