Birthplace of Two Kings
Phung Hung (761–802): National hero who led a successful revolt against Tang Dynasty rule, known as “Bo Cai Dai Vuong” (Great King Father).
Ngo Quyen (898–944): Greatest military leader who defeated the Southern Han army on the Bach Dang River in 938, ending 1,000 years of Chinese rule and establishing Vietnam’s independence.
Both kings have temples in Duong Lam where locals still pay respects.
Laterite Architecture
Laterite: A reddish clay stone, quarried locally, that hardens when exposed to air. Duong Lam’s ancient houses (300–400 years old) are built entirely of laterite – walls, gates, even wells. The porous stone keeps interiors cool in summer and warm in winter.
Preservation: Only about 20 original laterite houses remain, protected by the state. Some families still live in them, offering a rare glimpse into traditional village life.
Mia Pagoda (Sung Nghiem)
Founded: 15th century (Le Dynasty). Renowned for its 287 antique statues, including the famous Tuyet Son statue (depicting a meditating Buddha) – considered a masterpiece of Vietnamese sculpture.
Architecture: Traditional Vietnamese pagoda layout with multiple courtyards, ancient stone steles, and intricate wood carvings. A must-see for art and history lovers.

Duong Lam must-eat specialties
Chả cá Làng (grilled fish): Fresh river fish marinated with turmeric, galangal, and dill – similar to Hanoi’s famous cha ca but with village twist.
