Getting there: Hue is 3 hours by train from Da Nang, 4 hours from Hoi An (by car). Hue has its own airport (Phu Bai) with flights from Hanoi and HCMC.

Citadel exploration: 3–4 hours · 10 min to pagoda

Morning

8:00 – Breakfast at hotel (try Bun Bo Hue)
8:30 – Walk/cycle to Imperial City entrance (Ngo Mon Gate)
9:00 – Enter Imperial Citadel (UNESCO World Heritage)
9:15 – Explore Thai Hoa Palace (throne room)
10:00 – Forbidden Purple City (former royal residence)
11:00 – The To Mieu (temples of dynastic cult)

Pro tip: Khai Dinh Tomb is the most photogenic but crowded – go early. Minh Mang is more peaceful. Hire a private car for the day (around 800k VND) to see all tombs comfortably.
