NINH BINH 2026
NINH BINH · 1 DAY
Trang An · Mua Cave · Tam Coc · Halong Bay on Land
1 day (8am–8pm) Trang An boat tour Mua Cave hike Local lunch included Best: Feb–Apr, Sep–Nov
Ninh Binh – Halong Bay on Land: Just 90km south of Hanoi, Ninh Binh province offers a stunning landscape of limestone karsts, winding rivers, and ancient temples. This 1-day itinerary is designed to capture the essence of the region: a serene boat ride through Trang An’s cave system, a panoramic hike to Mua Cave, and a taste of local cuisine. It’s the perfect day trip from Hanoi for nature lovers, photographers, and culture seekers.
Full Day Hanoi → Trang An Boat Tour → Mua Cave → Tam Coc (Optional) → Return
100km · 2–2.5 hour drive each way · early departure recommended (7:30–8:00 AM)

Morning (7:30 – 13:00)

  • 7:30 – Depart from Hanoi Old Quarter (hotel pickup by bus or private car)
  • 10:00 – Arrive in Ninh Binh, short rest stop
  • 10:30 – Transfer to Trang An boat pier
  • 11:00 – Trang An boat tour (UNESCO World Heritage): 2.5–3 hours gliding through caves, temples, and karst peaks. Choose route 1 or 3 for the most caves (including Bright Cave, Dark Cave).
  • 13:30 – Return to pier, transfer for lunch

Afternoon (13:30 – 20:00)

  • 13:45 – Lunch at local restaurant – try Ninh Binh specialties: goat meat, crispy rice (cơm cháy), and mountain snails.
  • 15:00 – Drive to Mua Cave viewpoint (10 min)
  • 15:30 – Begin climb: 500 stone steps to the top (about 20 minutes). The panoramic view over Tam Coc valley is the iconic photo of Ninh Binh.
  • 16:30 – Descend, free time to explore the cave or relax
  • 17:00 – Optional: Short visit to Tam Coc for a quick boat ride (if time permits) or cycle through rice fields.
  • 18:00 – Begin return journey to Hanoi
  • 20:00 – Arrive Hanoi Old Quarter, drop-off at hotel
Pro tip: Trang An boat tours can be busy – arriving by 10:30 AM helps avoid the largest crowds. The rowers often use their feet – a local skill! Tip them 50,000 VND for great service. Mua Cave at sunset is magical but crowded – afternoon visits still offer beautiful light.

Trang An vs. Tam Coc – Which boat tour?

Trang An (recommended for 1-day): UNESCO World Heritage, larger area, more caves (9–12), temples, less commercial, 2.5–3 hours. Route 1 passes through 9 caves and 3 temples .

Tam Coc: “Halong Bay on Land” nickname, 3 caves, rice fields, 1.5 hours, more scenic in harvest season (May–June, September). Can be added if time permits.

For a 1-day trip, Trang An is the better choice due to its scale and UNESCO status. If you’re visiting in harvest season, consider a quick Tam Coc extension.

Ninh Binh must-eat specialties

Dê núi (mountain goat): Grilled, steamed, or with lemongrass and chili – the signature dish of Ninh Binh.
Cơm cháy (crispy rice): Deep-fried rice crust served with pork floss or braised fish sauce – addictive.
Ốc núi (mountain snails): Stir-fried with coconut or lemongrass – seasonal delicacy.
Cá kho làng Vũ Đại: Braised fish from the famous village – rich, caramelized flavor.
Xôi trứng kiến: Sticky rice with ant eggs – a local delicacy (for adventurous eaters).

Most day tours include a set lunch with these specialties – inform your guide of dietary restrictions in advance.

Tour options & pricing (2026)

Group tour (budget): $25–35 USD. Includes bus, guide, Trang An boat, Mua Cave, lunch. Most popular option.
