PM Opens Major New Eco-Tourism Site in Khammouane

Laos is expanding its tourism offerings with the official opening of the “Khun Kong Leng” eco-tourism site in Khammouane Province. Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone presided over the ceremony on March 20, marking the completion of the first phase of this ambitious project.

Developed by the INTRA Group, the site spans approximately 80 hectares alongside a 350‑hectare fossil conservation area and over 25,000 hectares of protected watershed forest. The first phase includes 108 guesthouses, four restaurants and bars, and more than 30 tourist activities. The site features over 20 caves and ancient fossils believed to be over 500 million years old, with plans to establish a future national geological park.

The project has already created over 300 jobs for local residents and aims to accommodate up to 3,000 visitors daily, with a long-term target of attracting one million tourists annually. Future development includes a hotel and an 18‑hole golf course.

ECONOMY THAILAND

Thailand Fuel Shortage Raises Tourism Concerns

Thailand’s tourism industry is facing potential disruption amid fears of an imminent fuel shortage. While officials have assured that petroleum reserves will last for over 90 days, the Thailand Hotel Association has warned that even the perception of fuel shortages could damage traveler confidence.

Industry experts note that while fuel price hikes can be managed through planning, unpredictability of fuel availability poses a more serious threat. With tourism contributing approximately 20 percent of Thailand’s GDP pre‑pandemic, any downturn could impact neighboring countries including Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam due to regional travel interconnectivity.
