Night train from Hanoi: The adventure begins with an overnight train to Lao Cai (departure ~9pm, arrival ~6am). Book a soft sleeper cabin for a comfortable
journey.
Trek: 3 km · 2–3 hours · downhill gentle
Morning
- 6:00 – Arrive Lao Cai station, meet driver for transfer to Sapa
- 7:30 – Arrive Sapa town, breakfast at local café
- 9:00 – Check into hotel (or leave luggage), freshen up
- 10:00 – Short walk to explore Sapa town, visit stone church
Afternoon & evening
- 13:00 – Lunch in town (try local salmon or sturgeon)
- 14:30 – Trek to Cat Cat village (H’Mong ethnic minority)
- 15:30 – Explore Cat Cat waterfall, traditional houses, textile workshop
- 17:30 – Return to Sapa (or transfer by car)
- 19:00 – Dinner and overnight in Sapa hotel
Pro tip: Cat Cat village can be touristy – go in the late afternoon to avoid crowds and enjoy soft light for photos.
Trek: 12–15 km · 5–6 hours · moderate with some hills
Morning
- 8:00 – Breakfast, prepare day pack
- 8:30 – Transfer to trek start point (Y Linh Ho)
- 9:00 – Begin trek through Muong Hoa valley
- 10:30 – Arrive Lao Chai village (Black H’Mong)
- 11:30 – Explore Lao Chai, meet local families
Afternoon & evening
- 12:30 – Picnic lunch overlooking rice terraces
- 13:30 – Continue trek to Ta Van village (Giay people)
- 15:30 – Arrive Ta Van, check into homestay
- 17:00 – Free time to explore village, bamboo forest
- 19:00 – Family dinner with local specialties
- 20:30 – Overnight at homestay
Pro tip: Join your host family in cooking – it’s a great way to learn about local ingredients and traditions. Bring a small gift (fruit or sweets) for the children.
Cable car + transfer · 4–5 hours
Morning
- 7:30 – Breakfast at homestay, say goodbye to family
- 8:30 – Transfer back to Sapa town
- 9:30 – Arrive Fansipan cable car station
- 10:00 – Cable car to Fansipan peak (world’s longest)
- 10:30 – Explore summit, pagoda, panoramic views
Afternoon & evening
- 12:30 – Cable car down, lunch in Sapa
- 14:00 – Free time for shopping (handicrafts, local products)
- 15:30 – Transfer to Lao Cai station
- 18:00 – Board night train back to Hanoi
- ~5:00 – Arrive Hanoi next morning
Pro tip: The cable car can have queues in peak season – book tickets online in advance. At the top, walk to the very peak for the 3,143m marker.
